How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the total initial investment in dollars — campaign budget, software cost, or project capital.
  2. Enter the total returns (revenue, savings, or equivalent dollar value) generated over the chosen period.
  3. Set the time period in months. The calculator returns ROI %, annualized ROI %, profit, and payback period.
  4. Compare to industry benchmarks (typical SaaS marketing ROI sits in the 3-5x range over 12-24 months).

Calculation method

ROI % = ((Returns - Investment) / Investment) x 100

Annualized = ((1 + ROI/100)^(12/months) - 1) x 100

Profit = Returns - Investment

Payback = Investment / (Returns / Months)

All calculations are deterministic. Annualization compounds monthly; for longer horizons consider NPV/IRR which discount future cash flows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Return on Investment (ROI) measures the profitability of an investment as a percentage. The formula is: ROI = ((Returns - Investment) / Investment) x 100. A 50% ROI means you earned $0.50 for every $1 invested.
Raw ROI ignores time. Annualized ROI normalizes results to a yearly rate so a 20% return over 6 months and a 20% return over 24 months can be compared fairly. Formula: ((1 + ROI/100)^(12/months) - 1) x 100.
Healthy SaaS marketing programs target 3-5x ROI (300-500%) on a 12-24 month payback window. Below 100% means you are losing money on acquisition; above 500% often signals you are under-investing in growth.
Simple ROI does not. For long-horizon decisions (CapEx, multi-year contracts) use NPV or IRR which discount future cash flows. Use simple ROI for quick comparisons of campaigns or short payback periods.
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) divides revenue by ad spend only. ROMI (Return on Marketing Investment) includes the full marketing stack. ROI is the broadest — any investment, any return. Use ROAS for campaigns, ROMI for programs, ROI for business cases.
